Michael Murray is an insolvency lawyer and writer engaged by Ferrier Hodgson to write the Australian Insolvency Management Practice. At the invitation of the partners of Ferrier Hodgson, the late Terry Taylor, as the original author, handed over this responsibility to Michael in 2005.
Michael is presently the Legal Director of the Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA) in Sydney. He was for many years a lawyer with the Australian Government Solicitor and worked in insolvency and regulatory law advising ITSA, the ATO and ACCC. He appeared as counsel in several significant personal and corporate insolvency cases. He was a solicitor assisting on the HIH Royal Commission from 2001-2003. He is the author of Keay’s Insolvency – a standard text book on insolvency law and practice, and is a member of the editorial board of the Insolvency Law Journal. He also writes for the Insolvency Law Bulletin which he founded in 2000.
Michael has a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma in Criminology (first place) from the University of Sydney; he has lectured there in post-graduate insolvency for law and economics students. He completed Advanced Insolvency Law and Practice I and II (first places) from the University of Southern Queensland. He is a solicitor of the NSW Supreme Court.
