Biography

Ryan is a partner of Ferrier Hodgson based in the Sydney office working in the areas of restructure, turnaround and insolvency management. Ryan has extensive experience in corporate problem-solving assignments aimed at identifying and implementing solutions.

His recent experience has included being engaged as Administrator of REDgroup Retail in February 2011, which operated 280 bookstores under the Borders, Angus & Robertson and Whitcoulls brands in Australia and New Zealand. Ryan was primarily responsible for the ongoing trading and successful sale of the groups 90 New Zealand stores, a transaction which realised in excess of NZ$50 million for the Group’s creditors.

Since 2008 Ryan has been involved in many facets of the receivership of the Allco Finance Group, which has been one of the most complex formal appointments in Australian corporate history. The Allco Finance Group had significant investments across a number of sectors including shipping, rail, aviation, funds management, infrastructure, property and a global-assets division.

Ryan is at the forefront of the restructuring industry’s understanding of the anticipated introduction of Australia’s Personal Property Securities Act (anticipated for February 2012). Ryan has consulted to, and presented on this topic area to lenders, legal firms, and the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia (IPA).

Some of Ryan’s other recent key assignments have included: 

  • Restructuring advisor to the banking syndicate of a renewable energy fund with operations in the UK and the US. 
  • Receiver of the Hurlstone Group a large earthmoving business operating in New Zealand. 
  • The cross-border receivership of a global shipping company. 
  • Advising the unsecured noteholders of the Octaviar Group. 
  • A sell side advisory assignment seeking an investor in a USD650 million distressed debt portfolio in the Philippines.
